The pros and cons of having self-serve beer and wine in Michigan

Self-serve beer and wine could be in the works for Michigan bars and restaurants.

The Liquor Control Commission has proposed a rule change that would have Michigan join other states that permit such sales. 

Commission Chairman Andrew Deloney says: "We feel it is something folks in the industry would want to have available, but at the same time we recognize the issue of public health." The commission decided against having liquor included in the proposal.

Support for the proposed change seems to be split.

"It kind of takes all that personal feeling of being out away, and you kind of want that when you're somewhere. You want to know that someone's looking at you and saying hi to you," says Felix Teichman. He runs M-Brew in Ferndale, an up-north style beer lodge. 

He recognizes the pros and cons of self-serve, but believes it will ultimately take away from the overall experience of going to a bar. 

"A busy Friday night? I know I've had to wait for beers before. It's definitely a pain," he says. But, he also argues, "You have underaged drinking that could happen. People don't know how to properly pour a beer or maintain a beer tap."

He adds the interaction with the bartenders and servers is fun and can really add to the customer's experience.
