Two EMU students killed in head-on collision in Ypsi. Twp Sunday

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) --  Two Eastern Michigan University students are dead after a head-on collision early Sunday morning in Ypsilanti Township.

According to Eastern Michigan University, the two students were identified as 23-year-old Jordan Hopkins, of Dexter, a senior majoring in psychology and Shannise Heady, 21, of Hazel Crest, Ill., a junior majoring in health care administration. Heady was also a member of the women's basketball team.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office says the accident happened just before 1 a.m. Sunday on Hewitt Road, near Midvale Street.

According to police, Heady and Hopkins were traveling northbound on Hewitt Street, when the car crossed the center line and struck a southbound vehicle, causing a head-on collision.

The 22-year-old driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"This is a tragic loss," said Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin. "We send our thoughts and prayers to Jordan's and Shannise's families and friends at this difficult time."

The accident remains under investigation by the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office.  It is believed speed was a factor.
