Man fatally shot by police, just moments after killing an intruder

- A Colorado man was shot and killed by police in his own home -- just moments after he had shot and killed an intruder.

The Aurora Police Department says several 911 calls came in around 1:30 a.m. Monday about an intruder breaking into a home.

When police pulled up to the house, officers heard gunshots coming from inside and rushed in, where they saw a man with a gun. Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz says the scene was "very chaotic and violent" -- and that an officer then shot the armed man. The man was then rushed to the hospital where he later died.

After the shooting, police were clearing the house when they found another deceased man on the bathroom floor. An injured child was also in the bathroom. Police soon learned the man they had shot actually lived in the home, and that he had just shot the intruder in the bathroom moments before.

Police didn't elaborate on the child's age or injuries, but say the child was taken to the hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries that were caused by the intruder.

"This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved," Chief Metz said, adding that the department is providing assistance to the family of the deceased resident.

Chief Metz says the officer involved has been placed on administrative reassignment with pay, per department policy. An investigation is ongoing.

Police haven't given the names yet of the homeowner or the suspect.

Aurora is a suburb of Denver.
