Neighbors, strangers give boy belated Halloween surprise

- It is an amazing story of giving in a Georgia community. It’s what a dozen families are doing two days after Halloween for a 12-year-old boy who was in the hospital and missed the holiday.

Some residents in Paulding County are holding a “Halloween Do-Over” for David Dakake. The special surprise let David go trick-or-treating in style.

FOX 5 was there as David’s mother, Leann Dakake, granted him a special time warp back to All Hallows’ Eve. Neighbors and complete strangers came together to help.

Alex, a complete stranger was among the hundreds of people who heard David spent the last few days in the hospital and missed one of his favorite times of the year, so Alex had to help.

Leann said when David heard he was going to miss Halloween, it broke his heart, so she reached out to one neighbor and social media. The turnout brought Leann to tears.

The Dakakes adopted David from Latvia in 2007 when he was a mere toddler. He was born premature. David is the youngest of 10 children. The other children are adopted from Russia, Latvia and China.

David is now 12 and has a mild form of cerebral palsy that affects his legs, but he still walks, runs and his mom said even dances. He is also profoundly deaf and just last year got new hearing aids.

What’s extraordinary about this story, the Dakakes just moved into this community a few days ago. Leann said to see neighbors, complete strangers, go out of their way to make a little boy smile is amazing.

Because of one post and because of David Dakake, Angels Among Us is planning to make the Trunk or Treat an annual event calling it Trunk Abilities for Special Needs Children.
