Dad's Ikea Hack gives son a bed with a slide and secret room

- Parents, you know the drill. Your kids outgrown the crib/toddler bed and need a bigger sleeping space, but they may not be so pumped about the big move. One dad wanted to give his son the "coolest bed ever" to make the transition as easy as possible.

So, Eric Strong did some research on Ikea Hacks, which is altering or repurposing Ikea furniture from their intended function. (Seriously, a quick Internet search will give you hundreds of results. There's even a whole website dedicated to Ikea Hacks.)

What he came up is something found in probably every kid's dream bedroom -- a bed with a slide, a secret room and a few other little surprises (which you'll have to check out his YouTube video to see). And, yes, the secret room is only accessible if you pull a fake book on the bookshelf.

He posted the YouTube video to show how he created the bed and what it looks like assembled. It was posted a year ago, but for whatever reason it has just started making the Internet rounds recently.

With his video currently going viral, Strong made a video a few days ago responding to some of the most common questions he gets about the bed. You can check that one out here if you're interested.

In that video, he estimates the bed cost him about $850 to make. He says he knows that's pretty expensive, but not in compatison to custom-made beds like these ones. He says the bed also gives his son storage space and a way of entertaining himself "that does not involve video games or a touch screen."

That, he says, definitely made it worth the cost for him and his wife.

And as far as the safety concerns, Strong says he's watched his son and his friends play in the secret room and on the slide for a year now, and that it's no more dangerous than any playground or any other playset you may have in your house.
