Wicked Weather Week: Severe weather means heavy rain, too

When you hear the words 'severe weather in Michigan', what do you think? Is it huge soft balls, swirling clouds, tornadoes? Sure those are a big deal but those are the flashy ones. Last summer, we were reminded to pay attention to the rain.

In August, 4-6 inches of rain fell across Metro Detroit. Roads were shut down, basements were flooded, and it all came in just a few short hours.

The rain was so bad, it was the second most rain Metro Detroit had ever received in recorded history! A total of 4.5 inches fell at the airport. The highest was 4.74 inches set way back on July 31, 1925!

It doesn't take much rain to cause problems. When you're on the road, remember the old rhyme: turn around don't drown. Just 12 inches of moving water can and will sweep away your vehicle.
