Woman accused of cutting baby from pregnant woman's body to fake a miscarriage

A Colorado woman is accused of stabbing a pregnant woman, removing her unborn child and then using the fetus to fake a miscarriage.

Investigators say Dynel Lane used a Craigslist ad for baby clothes to lure the victim to her home, where she then beat, stabbed and removed her fetus. Medical experts say the incision was well performed and would have required research.

After the attack, Lane left the home and the victim was able to call 911. Police arrived to find the 26-year-old woman in the basement with cuts to her stomach and her baby gone.

Lane, 34, had taken off to an area hospital, telling staffers she suffered a miscarriage. Officials say she had been telling her own family she was pregnant. They also believe she may be mentally ill and also coping with the loss of her own child years prior.

Lane was apprehended at the hospital and is being held on suspicion of several charges.

An autopsy of the baby will determine exactly what charges Lane will face.

"Essentially, there is no way murder charges can be brought if it is not established that the fetus lived as a child outside the body of the mother," explains Boulder's district attorney, Stan Garnett.

The mother is alive and is expected to recover after surgery.
