LISTEN: Red Wings sign defensemen Trevor Daley & Luke Witkowski

NHL free agency started at noon Saturday and shortly afterwards the Red Wings announced the signing of veteran defenseman Trevor Daley to a three-year contract worth a reported just over nine million dollars.

Daley, 33, won the Stanley Cup this past season for the second year in a row with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Daley has also played for the Chicago Blackhawks & Dallas Stars during his 14-year NHL career.  

In 894 regular season NHL games, the 5'11", 195 pound Canadian, has 78 goals, 200 assists and is a +22.  In 71 career playoff games, Daley has six goals, 12 assists and a +7.

Last season Daley missed time after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery and played in 56 regular season games.

The veteran had five goals, 14 assists and was a +7.  In 21 playoff games this past season, Daley had one goal, four assists and was a +7.

The Red Wings also announced the signing of defenseman Luke Witkowski to a one-year deal worth a reporter 750 thousand dollars.

Witkowski, 27, is a native of Holland, Michigan and played four years at Western Michigan University.  He was drafted 160th overall in the 2008 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.  

In 54 career games with the Lightning, the right handed shot defenseman has four assists and is a -1. Witkowski split time last year between the Lightning and AHL Syracuse Crunch where he had five assists.
