The Detroit Red Wings announced shortly after free agent signing were allowed that they have agreed with veteran center Frans Nielsen on a six-year contract.

Nielsen, 32, had 20 goals and 32 assists in 81 regular season games for the New York Islanders last season.  He also had 3 goals and 3 assists in 11 playoff games.

The Denmark native and alternate captain for the Islanders, has played in 606 regular season NHL games, all with the Islanders, and has 119 career goals and 230 assists.  Nielsen has played in a career 24 playoff games with 4 goals and 6 assists.

Nielsen is expected to be the first or second line center for the Red Wings and play special teams.
