WATCH: Berenson Announces Retirement

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) - Michigan hockey Head Coach Red Berenson announced Monday that he will retire following his 33rd season behind the bench for the Wolverines.

Berenson, 76, won the 2015-16 Big Ten Coach of the Year award with a 22-7-5 regular season record, which included winning the Big Ten Tournament.  They lost 5-2 to North Dakota in the NCAA Regional Final. 

This past season the Wolverines went 13-19-3, it was the fewest number of wins for a Berenson led team since the 1985-86 season.

He is a University of Michigan graduate and has guided the Wolverines to two NCAA Hockey National Championships and eleven Frozen Fours.  Berenson played in 987 regular season NHL games.  

FOX 2's Jennifer Hammond caught up with the hockey legend last season and also spoke with 2015-16 players and current professional hockey players JT Compher & Tyler Motte, plus Red Wings' Head Coach Jeff Blashill and former players Mike Knuble & Dylan Larkin.
