Run Whitey Run: Fast cars, preaching, and moonshine

If you're ever down around these parts and you're looking for a little adrenaline rush, Whitey is your guy. Quintessentially Appalachian, Pastor Whitey Taylor is a hillbilly PT Barnum with a wild show you have to see to believe.

There's no big top at Franklin County Speedway in Franklin County, Virginia but there is a circus of a different kind.

In the heart of the Appalachian Mountains is where stock car racing all began with outlaws moving moonshine. Today, the moonshine is still being made, the cars are still stock (kind of) and Whitey's selling it all. Even Jesus.

This good old boy host has it all: He'll pray for you meet a mate, conduct the wedding, feed ya at his track, and he's even got the connection on a quart of 'shine. Just head to the back of the gas station on route 220.

"A good old boy is somebody who can come out here and drive cars really fast, chase all the pretty girls, drink beer on Saturday night and be on the front row of church on Sunday morning," Whitey told Charlie LeDuff.

Make no mistake about it though, this is a racetrack and it can be a dangerous place. It's okay though, Whitey's got an ambulance on site and ready. Only don't expect any help from that ambulance; it's just a prop.

Whitey is America. And his track is too. It's family friendly and welcome to all. Yes, even Yankees like Charlie can ride. He got him a car and put him behind the wheel.

Meet Whitey for yourself and see Charlie behind wheel on the next Americans with Charlie LeDuff.
