The American's with Charlie LeDuff: Apparent gunshots heard during Ferguson protests

- A burst of what sounded like gunfire was heard amid protests in Ferguson Monday night.

A crowd of people reacted by chanting "'Whose streets, our streets.'"

Other chants from the large crowd included "'Don't shoot'" as protesters moved toward police.

The reaction came after St. Louis County prosecutor Robert Cull announced white police officer Darren Wilson would not be charged in the August shooting death of 18-year-old black teen Michael Brown.

"As an American citizen we deserve our rights," said a young black man who said he was 23. "Nationwide this touched a lot of people. There's people in New York, Atlanta, Detroit. Everybody is rallying, protesting about this."

A helicopter flew over as glass began to break.
