Freezing rain vs. sleet: what's on your cars this morning

(FOX 2) - Hundreds of schools are closed Wednesday morning due to icy conditions on the roadways. 

For those clearing off your car on the way to work, you may notice you'll be chipping away at different types of ice. FOX 2 Weather Authority Derek Kevra says that means we got both freezing rain and sleet overnight. 

The weather overnight started with freezing rain, which we can tell by the fine layer of ice covering our headlights, mirrors and side windows. 

Then, you may see on your windshield and car hood the layer that's more slush-like. That's the sleet. 

On top of that, many of us saw another round of freezing rain, which covered the sleet with another layer of thin ice. 

The fact that we had the sleet is good news, actually. It brought down the ice totals, and will help cut down on power outages and slippery roads.

We are still tracking freezing rain right now though. If you're out clearing your car early, you may feel that misty, drizzly precipitation. 

We do have more moisture to the southwest of us right now, and that will slide into the region so the freezing rain isn't done just yet. Any additional ice accumulation will be very minimal though.
