Some Detroit police officers don't like a plan to require them to punch time clocks at the beginning and end of their shifts.

The Detroit News reports it's part of efforts to improve what officials say was an antiquated payroll system.

At the recommendation of auditing firm Ernst & Young during the city's bankruptcy, time clocks have been installed in most city buildings. The proposed policy for police is expected to kick off in March.

Some other U.S. cities use time clocks for police. Critics say the plan isn't feasible, in part since some officers don't work set shifts and are often called to crime scenes from home.

Detroit human resources director Denise Starr says details of how the time clock system would work for officers are being finalized.
