Attorney: teen who hit cop destroyed evidence, flushed system after crash

DETROIT (WJBK) - The 19-year-old charged with a hit-and-run that severely hurt a Detroit Police Officer was arraigned on reckless driving and failure to stop but was also accused of flushing his system before he turned himself into police.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office announced charges Tuesday against 19-year-old Jonathan David Cole of Belleville in the crash that severely injured Officer Fadi Shukur. Court records didn't list a lawyer for Cole, who is due back in court later this month after being ordered held Tuesday on $150,000 bond.

During Tuesday's arraignment, the prosecuting attorney claimed that Cole's parents destroyed 'key evidence' but did not elaborate about what the evidence was. The attorney also claimed he flushed his system with water and apple cider vinegar.

Cole did not have an attorney present for the preliminary hearing.

Police: Suspect in custody in hit-and-run, officer in critical condition

Cole is accused of hitting Shukur early Saturday morning. The 30-year-old police officer was called to a large crowd gathering at a vigil at McNichols near Stahelin when he was hit.

Shukur has been with the department for just one year and was just married a month ago. 

As of Tuesday morning, Officer Shukur was still listed as critical at Sinai Grace.
