A barricaded gunman situation in Romulus has ended peacefully Friday in the Wayne and Wick road area.

The gunman was a suspect in an attempted carjacking who was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with police. The suspect then ran into a home where two children were inside.

One was able to get out the other, a 7-year-old, was held inside for 20 minutes by the suspect who engaged in a barricaded standoff with officers.

The suspect eventually surrendered the child sometime after 7 p.m. Police engaged in negotiations with the man until he eventually surrendered, reports FOX 2's Jessica Dupnack.

The chain of events began at 4 p.m. with the man's failed carjack attempt of a vehicle at Wayne and Wick at the Marathon gas station. From there the man ran from the scene into the neighborhoods on Wick towards Vining Road. He was jumping through backyards over fences.

He then jumped into a yard where a man was outside with his dog. The dog chased him, leading to the suspect then shooting and wounding the dog.

The man hopped over the fence behind the home in a yard in the 34700 block of Stewart and that was when police closed in on him. Police engaged gunfire with the man when he refused to drop his weapon. The suspect was then shot several times.

The man hopped back into the yard where he had shot the dog and got inside the home where the 7-year-old boy and another child, a 10-year-old, were. The 10-year-old was able to escape with the man who was confronted earlier with his dog.

The 7-year-old was then released after 20 tense minutes unharmed from the house, located in the 34500 block of Wick. At about 7:30 p.m. the suspect surrendered.

Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said that the suspect was not expecting children to be inside the second house after he was shot and chose the house at random.

The dog, a pit bull, was shot in the face but is expected to recover.

There has been no information released about the suspect or his injuries.
