Neighbor accidentally shoots, kills woman being mauled by dog

A neighbor who tried to save a woman being mauled by a dog accidentally fatally shot her Monday night.

The 53-year-old victim was walking to work in the 9500 block of Goodwin in Detroit when a vicious dog started to maul her.

A neighbor, who is a CPL holder, fired several shots trying to save the woman. He hit the dog, but also hit the woman in the back. She died at the hospital from her wounds.

The man is cooperating with police.

"It is a very tragic story," said Capt. Darin Szilagy, Detroit police. "You feel for this woman, she was going to her job. You feel for the guy trying to be a Good Samaritan. Unfortunately, we're responsible for every round we fire."

Police are still looking for the dog, which is believed to be wounded. It is unclear what charges will be filed.
