Double shooting in liquor store parking lot appears to be random: police

- Police are investigating after two people were shot in a liquor store parking lot late Sunday night. One of the victims died later at the hospital.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the King of Woodward liquor store just after 11 p.m. at Tennyson and Woodward, which is on the Detroit-Highland Park border. Highland Park police are investigating.

Police identify the victim that died as 48-year-old Edwin Saxton. He was shot in the chest, and the second victim was grazed in the leg when investigators say someone opened fire on the liquor store's customers. That victim is hospitalized in stable condition.

Highland Park Police Detective Brian Menge says, right now, this appears to be a random act of violence and they don't believe the two victims were intended targets.

"An innocent bystander, somebody who was standing there - my understanding by talking to witnesses - that was just talking to friends. It was totally out of the blue," Menge says.

Police don't have anyone in custody right now, nor have they released a description of the suspect.

Witnesses say the suspect was a black man about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing about 170 lbs. He had on tan pants and a white shirt.
