Icy weather shuts down Detroit Metro Airport for nearly 14 hours

ROMULUS, Mich. (FOX 2) - Icy weather conditions prompted a near 14-hour shutdown of Detroit Metro Airport Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. 

The Federal Aviation Administration reported Detroit Metropolitan Airport closed about 8 p.m. Tuesday. It was expected to reopen overnight, but all arrivals and all departures were still halted until about 10 a.m. when one runway re-opened. 

Crews are still working hard right now to get the remaining runways and taxiways back open. 

Customers are still highly encouraged to check their flight status before heading to the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration says some arriving flights are expected to be delayed an average of 5 hours.

The airport said earlier in a statement that maintenance crews had been treating taxiways and runways at the airport leading up to the shutdown, but "precipitation has diluted the de-icing fluid, causing it to be ineffective." All of southeast Michigan was under a Winter Weather Advisory overnight. 

Slippery conditions from freezing rain caused spinouts and other accidents on the roadways. More than 700 schools also closed. 

Temperatures are continuing to warm throughout the morning, causing the ice to melt into a slushy mess. 

A wet day is ahead of us still, too, with rain throughout much of the morning and afternoon. Highs will be in the low 40s. 

While the ice is slowly clearing up on the roads, be cautious still of sidewalks, driveways and parking lots when you're leaving home or getting into work.
