Northern Michigan state trooper wounded in traffic stop shootout

A traffic stop turned into a fatal shooting leaving a state trooper wounded in northern Michigan.

A Michigan State Trooper was shot several times during a traffic stop at 1:30 Friday afternoon in Lake Township in Missaukee County. He is expected to survive, according to a state police release.

Two men and one woman were inside the car. One man fled and began firing striking the trooper who returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect.

The Houghton Lake Post trooper was conscious and alert when transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. The gunman is deceased.

The other two occupants, who remained in the vehicle, are in custody. The incident remains under investigation.

The involved trooper is not being identified at this time.
