Personal information compromised for nearly 20,000 Henry Ford Health System patients

Henry Ford Health System says personal health information for nearly 20,000 of its patients has been compromised.

Henry Ford Health System is notifying 18,470 patients after saying their information has been viewed or stolen.

They say they learned it happened on October 3, when someone gained access or stole the email logins for a group of employees. Using the email logins, the suspect would have had access to email accounts of the employees -- which contain patient health information.

"We are very sorry this happened. We take very seriously any misuse of patient information, and we are continuing our own internal investigation to determine how this happened and to ensure no other patients are impacted," Henry Ford Health System said in a statement.

The patient information viewed or taken may have included their name, date of birth, medical record number, provider's name, date of service, department's name, location, medical condition and health insurer. Neither their Social Security number nor credit card information was revealed. They add they aren't sure if the information has been used inappropriately.

Patients who received a notification letter are asked to call 844.327.2396.
