Breaking the silence on elder abuse

- Elder abuse is a problem that's hard to talk about, but it affects some of our most vulnerable loved ones. Elder abuse affects about one in ten people, whether it's neglect, healthcare fraud, physical, emotional or even sexual abuse.

But there is something we can do to prevent it, and it starts with breaking the silence.

An event is happening on Thursday, November 9 at the Community House in Birmingham that aims to do just that. It's called An Evening of Empowerment: Breaking the Silence on Elder Abuse.

Richard Astrein, a Birmingham business leader, is co-chairing the event. He joined us in studio with Jane Collins, an executive director of an assisted living and nursing care facility to tell us more about the event. You can hear from them in the video player above.

Doors open for the event at 6 p.m. For more information and to order tickets, visit www.stannesmead.org
