2-year-old in crash that killed tow truck driver released from hospital

YPSILANTI, Mich. (WJBK) - The Michigan State Police said Friday that the 2-year-old who was riding in the backseat when a woman crashed her SUV into a bus, killing a tow truck driver, has recovered enough to be sent home.

The 2-year-old boy was riding in the back of the SUV without a seatbelt or child restraint Tuesday morning when it smashed into the bus and tow truck driver. The boy had been hospitalized all week but on Friday, he was released from the hospital

The Tuesday morning accident on I-94 took the life of Nader Chehadi, a 42-year-old tow truck driver who was working on the disabled bus on the side of the freeway. Andre Shantay Edwards is accused of driving without a license when she plowed into the bus with her three kids, all under 5, who were not strapped into their seatbelts in the back seat. 

A 5 year-old remains in critical condition while a 4-year-old is now in serious but stable condition. A 28-year-old passenger in the front seat also remains in critical condition.

According to documents obtained by FOX 2, Edwards had her license revoked twice since 2009. The most recent time was for having three or more alcohol-related convictions in ten years. Edwards also has possession of alcohol charges as a minor and several suspensions. She was even cited for drunk driving, joy riding and was in an accident this year. 

Chehadi was a 42-year-old father to two kids, ages 2 and 5. 

The crash is still under investigation and police are unsure if alcohol was a factor.
