AG hopeful Dana Nessel takes on sexual harassment headlines in controversial ad

DETROIT (WJBK) - A new ad released only on social media features attorney general candidate Dana Nessel is generating a lot of buzz as she makes promises not to sexually harass her staff. 

"Who can you trust most not to show you their penis in a professional setting?" she asks in the ad.

From Senator Al Franken to the allegations against Congressman John Conyers, the claims of sexual harassment and assault have piled on. 

Nessel, a former assistant prosecutor, says she's advocated for countless sex abuse victims and remained a fierce advocate for people who've been harassed and abused. She says this ad does not cross the line, it is instead is a testament to where we are as a society where men in positions of power are being exposed as abusers.  

"I think the ad was rather tame when it comes to the news stories that have come out whether they are journalists, whether they're in Hollywood, or whether they're political representatives - we've heard some pretty lewd stories coming out," Nessel said.

She's running against Republican House Speaker Tom Leonard and state Senator Tonya Schuitmaker on the democratic side, She will likely be joined by former west Michigan U.S. Attorney Patrick Miles and state Representative Tim Greimel. She's best known for her 2012,  DeBoer v. Snyder Case which took on adoption and marriage for same-sex couples in Michigan-ultimately legalizing same-sex marriage across the nation.  

"I'm constantly hearing, "well I like you, I like your candidacy, I like things that you say but we can't have an all female ticket and my response is always the same: why?" Nessel said.
