Boy Scout, 12, dies in sand dune collapse in Michigan

Police say a 12-year-old Boy Scout has died after being buried by sand in southwestern Michigan.

South Haven police say Gage Wilson dug into the side of a sand dune Saturday and crawled into the small space, and then the sand collapsed. Police say two boys who were with Gage didn't notice his disappearance for up to 30 minutes.

Emergency officials were called to the Boy Scout Camp, which is near Van Buren State Park, around 4:15 Saturday afternoon. When they got there, scout leaders were performing CPR on the boy. Emergency officials took over and eventually were able to get a pulse and the boy was airlifted to the hospital, where he was later, though, pronounced dead.

This incident is still under investigation but at this time police say it appears to be a tragic accident.

The Michigan Crossroads Council of the Boy Scouts of America released a statement, saying, "This is a very difficult time for our scouting family."

The boy was from Portage, near Kalamazoo.
