The theme of Duggan's election victory party was for "One Detroit" while Young lost running a campaign that promoted the idea of a divided city, one where the neighborhoods were forgotten while the downtown district thrived.

Young's campaign also focused on race - one which Duggan spoke out about in his victory speech - again hammering on his theme of "One Detroit."

"We had to decide what kind of campaign we're going to run, it was a decision and I had resources. Were we going to run the kind of campaign to trash our opponent or would we spend the time talking about the vision for the next four years.

"We made a decision with all the us vs. them attacks. We decided we didn't care. We were not going to respond to it. And I am very proud of the fact this whole campaign we did not spend one dime attacking our opponent. I hope this is the year we put this us vs. them politics behind us."

Coleman Young II spoke to his supporters Tuesday night (watch video No. 2 in player), saying his campaign's principals "shall endure forever."

"This one's for you, Detroit, we love you, we appreciate you. I thank God for you, Detroit," he said. "Even though you didn't choose me, I know we can do great things together. Remember why we got in this race in the first place so people who would never have had a voice would have one ... We used our power to serve the powerless."

The current mayor of Detroit was sworn into office Jan. 1, 2014, defeating Benny Napoleon in a fairly close race. He served as the president & CEO, Detroit Medical Center from 2004-12, Wayne County Prosecutor from 2001-2003, Deputy Wayne County Executive from 1987-2000, and Assistant Corporation Counsel for Wayne County from 1985-1986.

It was a heated race, with Young taking jabs like comparing Duggan to Kwame Kilpatrick and linking him to white supremacy
