A 23 year old Detroit mother was shot and killed execution style exactly one year ago. Her family making the heartbreaking return to honor her.

“It's the worst pain in the world to get that call that something happened to your child,” mother Lashawn Lakey said.

One year ago, Lashawn Lakey got that call, her daughter Jalisa Baxter had been murdered on Detroit's east side.

“For a mother to lose a child like that, it's devastating,” she said.

Jalisa and her friend Eric Perkins were discovered inside of a car at Holcomb and Moffet, he was in the driver's seat, she in the passenger. They were both shot in the back of the head execution style.

The 23-year-old mom leaves behind a son Demauri who just turned 8 last month.

“This is his first birthday without her, so you know it’s really hard,” Lakey said.

“She was a nice person,” Demauri Baxter said, son of Jalisa.

Demauri was there Sunday evening with his family on the year anniversary of his mom's death, remembering the best things about her like only a child can.

“She made good sandwiches and good chicken,” he said.

They haven't told him that Jalisa was murdered the news of her death has been hard enough.

“All he knows is that she was in an accident and didn't make it, that's all he knows,” Lakey said.

Like so many other families feeling the ripple effect of gun violence they're looking for justice. No arrests have been made in this double homicide.

All this family can do it wait, the victim’s sister Jasmine Abrams confident they’ll get the answer’s they’re looking for.

“I don't know when it will happen but I have faith that it will happen, we will get closure,” she said.
