Family starts GoFundMe after fatal shooting near Detroit's Russell Industrial Center

The family of a man injured during a fatal shooting is asking for help trying to solve the shooting that injured one man and killed another.

Two men were shot last Friday on Detroit's southwest side near the Russell Industrial Center.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office confirms Ryan Harris Nelson, 21, died from multiple gunshot wounds. Family members say his cousin, Garrett Cornwell was also shot and is fighting for his life at a Detroit hospital.

Why the young men from Tennessee were there is not known but those who rent space here say this center is safe

"I'm here all the time, walk around all times of the day and at night. They got security down there. They're pretty good," Scott Sprague said.

Family members set up a GoFundMe account to raise money to help Garrett and his family pay for medical expenses. They also want to raise money to help get Garrett transported home when he is stable and strong enough for travel.

As the investigation continues into what led up to this criminal activity, those who are tenants say they hope this incident does not give the center does not get a back eye.

"Hopefully  it doesn't taint the image. I don't think it was the fault of the management. It really seems like a personal incident," Sprague said.

Investigators want anyone who has information on who committed this crime to contact Detroit Police or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
