Father shot 4 times after dropping daughter off at bus stop

YPSILANTI, Mich. (WJBK) - A family is facing hard times after a father was shot during a robbery.

Back in December, Bobby Thomas was just getting home after dropping his daughter off at the school bus stop when he was approached by a man. The man had a gun and wanted to rob him. Bobby says he's still wrapping his head around what happened next.

The 34-year-old father of two was shot twice in his neck and twice in his back.

Meanwhile, his wife and other daughter were inside, waiting for him to come home, and heard everything. 

"I heard what I thought was three loud bangs, thought it was one of our neighbor's cars backfiring," said Heather Thomas. "I went outside and he was screaming for help."

They say life hasn't been the same since.

Bobby, who was unemployed and receives Social Security, has not been able to work his normal odd jobs as a handyman. 

Heather says their insurance won't cover the full cost of physical therapy. And they no longer feel safe in the place they call home.

"My girls are terrified," he said. "The one, she'll sleep half the night, wake back up."

"I'm always on the lookout to see if someone is prowling around," Heather said. "I don't let my girls go out to the bus stop anymore, I make sure we get them to school."

Their friends started a fundraiser to help the Thomases move out of their mobile home community to a neighborhood they believe is safer. 

The family says the gunman is still at large.
