Police: Employee shoots, kills self at Ford Woodhaven Stamping Plant

- Police say a man shot and killed himself inside the Ford Woodhaven Stamping Plant Friday morning.

A 911 call came in just after 9 a.m. that a man had a gun inside the plant. Police say the man fired one shot, killing himself, when he was approached by police. Woodhaven police say no other gunshots were fired at any time, and that nobody else was injured.

Police say the man had a package with him that he discarded in the hallway. The bomb squad arrived on scene and the package was investigated. Michigan State Police say the package has been cleared and deemed safe.

Woodhaven police say threats were also made against the plant Friday morning, but couldn't confirm the origin of the threats at this time.

As per protocol, authorities have also swept the building and employees have been evacuated. No other threats have been found at this time.

Police Chief Robert Toth says the man is a 22-year-old employee who has been a temporary, part-time employee since March. Earlier, police said the employee was upset about a labor dispute.

As far as security, there are no metal detectors, but employees need an ID badge to enter the buildings

Ford Motor Company released the following statement: "Employees at Woodhaven Stamping Plant are safe after they were evacuated when a worker pulled a gun at the plant and shot himself. Woodhaven Police are on the scene."

The plant is located near I-75 between West and King roads in Woodhaven. Ford's website says 420 people are currently employed at the plant, and they they produce door panels, hoods and other car parts. The plant has been in operation since 1964.
