When Congressman John Conyers announced his retirement Tuesday, he endorsed his 27-year-old son to take his seat.

Now FOX 2 has learned his son, John Conyers III, was arrested in February for domestic violence in California but was not prosecuted.

Conyers reportedly accused his girlfriend of cheating on him after going through her computer, according to the Los Angeles County police report. He allegedly body slammed her on the bed and floor, where he pinned her down and spit on her. He then knocked the phone away when she attempted to call police during the struggle.

Records say the woman grabbed a knife to protect herself, but he disarmed her and slapped her before a second struggle for the knife in which the woman was cut.

The police report says there were independent witnesses and that the woman's injury cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that is was not accidentally sustained while Conyers was disarming her. The report states no other visible injuries on her could be found and that there were no witnesses who saw the pushing and shoving and "a misdemeanor domestic battery could not be proven."

The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office dropped the charges, but the girlfriend got a restraining order which is in effect until next March.

John Conyers III has spoken to the New York Times addressing the claims, saying he wanted to be transparent. He also said he apologized and was regretful for any part he played in escalating the altercation.

Conyers III is credited with writing a handful of articles for the Huffington Post with a bio that says he spends time between Detroit and Los Angeles. His bio also says he is a partner in a Detroit-based hedge fund and graduate of Morehouse.

Online, he has a YouTube page going under the name "Its Mr Conyers" he appears in a couple of music videos.
