Mother charged in death of 3-year-old boy is arraigned

Fighting tears while facing a judge Thursday, the mother of 3-year-old Kyrei Boyd of Detroit listened to the charges against her.

"You are charged with homicide, involuntary manslaughter. This charge is a felony with a maximum penalty of 15 years," a court worker said.

Police say 20-year-old Kenisha Boyd's young son found her boyfriend's gun and shot and killed himself. Boyd is also charged with lying to a peace officer - a 4-year felony.

"It's devastating for the people of Detroit any time a child is affected in a gun-related incident in this way," prosecution said.

Detroit police say last Wednesday on Morang, the little boy, who is autistic, found a gun in a bedroom that belonged to 22-year-old Demetrius Peals, Boyd's live-in boyfriend. Little Kyrei shot himself in the face.

"My son says he ran into the room and turned on the light and ... he was on the floor dead," said Monique Peals, Demetrius' mother.

He was arraigned last week on six felony charges, including involuntary manslaughter, child abuse and tampering with evidence.

"Your bond is going to be $50,000 10 percent," a court worker said.

Detroit police say the investigating officers, including state troopers with the city's homicide task force, requested a low bond to attend her child's funeral.

As a funeral is planned and a memorial for little Kyrei still grows outside the now vacant apartment, a community and a family must say goodbye.
