Woman found dead from multiple gunshot wounds on Detroit's east side

A 36-year-old woman was found dead last week from multiple gunshots wounds by a maintenance worker sent on a welfare check on Detroit's east side,

Latoya Matthews' family says she suffered from a mental illness and when they hadn't heard from her, they sent an apartment maintenance worker to her home to check on her.

Police say around 1:30 p.m. April 16, the worker found her face down in a pool of blood. She had been shot multiple times.

"That's been driving me insane cause I just don't know who did it. I just want to know who, why and how and why so many times? Why, how, why? What could somebody have done to you so bad to take their life away from their family, their kids, their grandkids?" she said.

Her daughter also says Matthews was found with several scratch marks on her body, which she believes could serve as a clue.

"I have a feeling it was somebody that she was helping, somebody she trusted. Somebody that was close to her, probably looked at him like a son maybe. Or somebody that wanted her and she stopped talking to," she said.

The medical examiner confirms Matthews died from multiple gunshot wounds. Police aren't able to say if anything was taken from her home. but family says her purse and phone were missing.
