Young man critically injured when shot by Detroit police officer: police

- A young man was critically injured in a shooting late Monday night involving a Detroit Police officer.

Detroit Police say the shooting happened around 10 p.m. in the 20000 block of Asbury Park, which is near Eight Mile Road and the Southfield Freeway.

Chief Craig said at a news conference Tuesday morning that officers saw a group of men standing in the street and went to investigate. One of the men, Olajuwon Israel, appeared to have a large bulge on his side, Craig said, and as police approached him he took off and started running.

Craig said he ran a few houses down the street, and then turned around and fired a single shot in the direction of three police officers. None of them were hurt but, fearing for their lives, Craig says two of the officers fired back. The 24-year-old suspect was hit once and rushed to the hospital.

Craig said there's still a lot of "high emotion" after one of their fellow officers was buried yesterday

Craig didn't give the suspect's name, but says he has a criminal history and is wanted on a warrant out of state. Craig also did not give any other information on the officers involved. He did say they were wearing body cams and that the footage has been reviewed.
