Girl, 4, with cerebral palsy takes her first steps after major surgery

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (STORYFUL) - A Michigan mother captured video of her young daughter beating incredible odds. 

Maya has Cerebral Palsy, and underwent a major spinal procedure in May. Doctors told the family it could take up to a year for Maya to walk on her own -- but the strong little girl proved everyone wrong. 

Just seven weeks after the surgery, Maya stood in her living room in Traverse City and began to walk on her own.

"I'm walking!" Maya says over and over in the video, in between smiles and giggles. "I even did a big step!"

Her family calls her Mighty Miss Maya. She learned to walk with a walker, but her parents were determined to give her the chance to walk on her own. 

After lots of research, they discovered selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery, which is what Maya had on May 9.
