You may use it as a garnish for a Bloody Mary or to scoop up your favorite dip, but in the juicing world celery is suddenly getting superstar celebrity status.
Oh you drink it all if you want to look younger and more refreshed says dermatologist dr. Steve grekin.
"I've personally been drinking celery juice for two years. Every day," says dermatologist Dr. Steve Grekin. Every day, putting stalks of celery into the juicer, which strips away the stringy fiber and leaves you with a surprisingly vibrant green juice. This dermatologist knows about healthy skin, and believes in the power of celery.
"What I found is, is it absolutely plumps your skin. Think of the stories we've done through the years on hyaluronic acid and the fillers with the shots and the whole thing. What's the idea? It binds water. With the celery juice, we're naturally binding water."
A best-selling author who calls himself The Medical Medium also calls himself the originator of the global celery juice movement. And celebrities are taking note.
Posts on social media show the rich and famous drinking celery juice in search of clearer skin, better digestion and more energy. To be clear, The Medical Medium has no medical training; he says he gets his information from communication with the spirit world.
So let's get back to the real doctor.
Dr. Grekin says there's no research about the pros or cons of drinking celery juice daily, but there's real science in the power of hydration. Hydrated cells attract more moisture, like a wet sponge soaking up water.
Celery is low in calories, is mostly water and is pretty cheap. So if you have a juicer and room to store a lot of produce, it might be worth a try.
"I definitely see it in the mirror, and also anecdotally so many patients tell me, 'You haven't aged a bit. In fact - I think you look younger.' And you know, I'm always the one that tells everybody, 'In less than three weeks I'm going to be 56 years old and I think my skin looks better than it did 10 years ago.'"
