'Best friend' of mom says kids walked by freezer daily

A woman who says she's the best friend of the mother accused of killing her children and putting their bodies in a freezer says she was one of the few people allowed inside the home and saw the freezer several times.

Stoni Blair and Stephen Berry- ages 13 and 9 at the time of their deaths, have not thawed out for medical examiners to determine their cause of death. The mother, 35-year-old Michelle Blair, has been charged with five felonies and, according to police, has admitted to killing them.

Her best friend spoke with FOX 2's Maurielle Lue Thursday morning. She lived next door to Mitchelle Blair at the MLK townhomes in east Detroit and says Blair's history of abuse played a large role in the way she treated her kids.

Her best friend, who asked not to be identified, told FOX 2 that she was not only allowed inside the house, she was also allowed to speak to Blair's children, something few adults were allowed to do so. She said every time she asked the children questions, they would look to their mom first to see if it was okay to answer.

She said she heard fights and screaming through the walls but it was always related to Blair's history of abuse.

"That freezer was right where my table was sitting (right inside the door)," she said. "I never saw blood on it. I never saw anyone open the freezer but you can't avoid going by it."

She said Blair started to act differently three years ago. That's around the time Stephen died. According to a source, she killed Stephen first after she said she caught him abusing another child. Nine months later, she told police she killed her daughter, Stoni. Click here for more on the death of the children. WARNING, graphic content.

On Wednesday, Blair was charged with four counts of child abuse and one count of committing child abuse in the presence of another felony. She faces life in prison. She'll be arraigned Thursday morning.
