Detroit NAACP to announce theme for fundraising dinner

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is scheduled to announce the theme for its 60th Annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner at the event's kickoff.

The Passing of the Gavel ceremony will be held Thursday evening at the Roostertail in Detroit. It also recognizes chairs from the 2014 dinner who will "pass the gavel" to chairs of this year's fundraiser.

General Motors Chief Executive Mary Barra is senior corporate chair for the May 3 dinner at Cobo Center in downtown Detroit.

The dinner is the Detroit branch's largest fundraiser, drawing about 10,000 people each year. Harvard University law professor Charles Ogletree Jr. was last year's keynote speaker.
