10-year-old girl saves mom during medical emergency in car

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - A 10-year-old girl calls 911 after her mom loses consciousness while driving and pulled the car over to safety.

A very brave young girl made a chilling 911 call after a daring rescue, pulling over the car herself when her mother has an emergency medical episode behind the wheel. Her two younger brothers were in the back seat.

Dispatcher: "Are you able to talk to your mom right now?"

"No," she said.

Dispatcher: "Are you able to wake her up?"

"Yes but she goes back to sleep," she said.

Lt. Ted Goff of the Southfield Police Department said the girl was well composed.

"When you hear the 911 call, she stayed calm throughout the whole thing," Goff said. "And this is a very stressful circumstance."

Southfield police say dispatchers got the call around 6:30 in the morning Tuesday.

"She managed to reach over and take control of the steering wheel, and pull the car safely to a stop on the shoulder," Goff said. "And she said, she told her father afterwards that P meant park and that's what she should do, put the car in park."

The girl tried her best to describe the surroundings during the call.

Dispatcher: "Do you know how to honk your horn?"

"Yes," she said.

Dispatcher: "I'm going to have you do that when someone gets in the area ok?"

"Ok" she said.

Dispatchers worked with the family's cell phone provider to locate the exact location where they were parked on Berg south of 10 Mile.

They were located shortly after by police and paramedics, who took the mother to the hospital. Police didn't specify what the emergency was, but say she is expected to be ok.

"All three kids, the 10-year-old daughter, the 7-year-old and 5-year-old sons, were all taken to the hospital by our officers, and they were picked up there by their father.

Southfield police call the girl a hero. Goff also says he plans on having her nominated for an award to recognize her courage.

"There are just so many what-ifs," he said. "Bad things that could've happened and I commend her for being so brave and remaining so calm."
