20-year-old construction worker new to job run over, killed by dump truck

A 20-year-old construction worker was killed in South Lyon on Wednesday after he was run over by a co-worker driving a dump truck.

Excited at the opportunity to have a real job, Emmanuel Gonzalez-Garcia's family says he just started working at a construction site in South Lyon. But hopes and dreams for the future came to an end Wednesday when police say he was tragically killed at his work site -- a driver working for Piper Trucking at the same construction site hit him.

"He had been run over by the dump truck. Fire department worked very hard for at least 30 minutes trying to save him," said South Lyon Police Chief Lloyd Collins.

Devastated, his family says the news can't be real.

"It almost doesn't seem real to us even though, we're obviously grieving," said his aunt, Mary Ann Garcia.

As the police investigation into what led up to this tragedy continues, sources tell Fox 2 that the victim was wearing music head phones, which is a violation of company policy. Fox 2 reached out to Ajax Paving, the company police say the victim was working for, but the wait for a response continues.

Investigators tell Fox 2 the victim was wearing a wireless Bluetooth communication device but it's unclear if he was playing music.

Before this deadly accident took place, Ajax Paving and Piper Trucking were out working on a road project for the Road Commission of Oakland County.

Officials at the Road Commission tell Fox  2 that their thoughts are with the victim's family, friends and co-workers and that they are waiting for the results of the police investigation to learn more about what happened.
