Black Lives Matter plans march in memory of Aiyana Stanley-Jones

DETROIT (WJBK) - A Black Lives Matter march and rally is anticipated later this evening in Detroit in memory of a young girl killed in a police raid years ago.

Aiyana Stanley-Jones was just 7 years old when she was shot during a botched police raid in May of 2010. Her death made international headlines.

In the middle of the night, police came through the door of a home on Lilybridge on Detroit's east side in attempts of locating a murder suspect. In all of the chaos, Aiyana was accidentally shot while she was sleeping on the couch.

She would have celebrated her 14th birthday today. The rally and march is set for 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 20, at Pallister Park in Detroit.

The case went to trial twice, and Officer Joseph Weekley has ultimately been acquitted after multiple mistrials and dismissal of charges. Today, all these years later, he remains on the force.

His name may sound familiar as he is the brother of another Detroit Police Department member who was recently in the news, Officer Nate Weekley.

Nate Weekley was recently demoted from detective to officer after posting inflammatory remarks to Facebook. In his post, Nate Weekley called 'Black Lives Matter' supporters "racists and terrorists."

Police Chief James Craig said his entire department must be held to a higher standard when it comes to what they post on social media.
