Carjack suspects caught hiding in vehicle's trunk

DETROIT - A pair of men suspected in a string of carjackings on Detroit's west side are off the streets tonight. Among their alleged victims is a friend of former Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee.

Authorities caught the suspects hiding out in the trunk of a car Thursday night.

They had been on the run since police released a surveillance video of one of their alleged capers.

Investigators say 21-year-old Andriel McGowan and 23-year-old Terry Lynn McLemore carjacked and shot a man at a Valero gas station on Greenfield near Schoolcraft on Sept. 25.

They also allegedly carjacked another man at a gas station on McNichols near Outer Drive two days later.

"From a criminology standpoint for the one they're caught for, there are probably 10 they weren't caught for," said Ralph Godbee.

Godbee, a pastor and former Detroit police chief's godson was shot during the Valero carjacking.

"A good young man coming home from work and enjoying his life," Godbee said. "And his life has been changed in a way that, the trauma, how can he ever go to a gas station again without thinking about that night."

Now there's a good chance they won't put anyone else through the same misery.

Police received a number of tips after releasing a surveillance video. The man who was shot at the Valero gas station identified McGowan as the gunman.

Both suspects are facing time in federal prison. The feds were able to pick up the case because the cars they allegedly stole, were manufactured in another state.

"If it's proven they've done what's been alleged," Godbee said. "I would pray they would spend a lot of time off the streets and the one thing about federal (prison), it's pretty much guaranteed if they're convicted they're going to do at least 85 percent of their time."
