A young couple, heading out for a date in Detroit, were carjacked and shot while family members watched in horror.

The couple were walking outside to their car for a date around 10:00 Monday night, when a light colored car pulled up and opened fire, police say.

The sound was so loud, neighbor Annie Barnes thought her house on Strathmoor was being shot. She walked outside to find the real targets were her 26-year-old nephew and his 25-year-old girlfriend.

"I was at my kitchen table working on my bills and I heard a pop and it startled me," Barnes said. "I saw my nephew and his girlfriend. She was on the ground. And he was trying to pick her up. It got me. It scared me. I'm scared."

The shooting was just feet away from the John R. King Academic and Performing Arts Academy. Annie's nephew was shot in the shoulder and is home recovering. His girlfriend is still in the hospital with more severe wounds but expected to be ok.

"It could've been a worse time for us but I'm glad they're alright," Barnes said.

After being shot, the couple's silver Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible was stolen and police are searching for the people responsible.

"We have too much of this going on. All this carjacking. Turn them in. Turn whoever, if you know something speak up," Barnes said.

Police are still investigating if this was a random carjacking and shooting. You can call them with information. Or leave an anonymous tip at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. No one is in custody at this time.
