Detroit Federation of Teachers: We support the teachers

DETROIT (WJBK) - More than 60 schools were closed Monday because so many teachers called in sick. Later that morning, the Detroit Federation of Teachers held a briefing at one of the closed down schools to talk about some of the deplorable conditions that the teachers are hoping to raise awareness about.

The union also wants to hold public hearings to talk about the rat infestations and overcrowded classrooms and all the other issues the teachers say they're taking a stand against when they call in sick and force schools to close down.

The recent string of sick-outs has not been organized by the DFT, but union leaders say they support the teachers.

"[The teachers] don't want their kids in these kind of conditions, so we have to stand in support with them and parents, when they see and they understand what their kids are subjected to, we believe they will stand with us," says Ann Mitchell, DFT Union President.

The DFT wishes for the school district's emergency manager to be part of the proposed public hearings as well.

Later Monday, teachers say they plan to hold a rally outside the Fisher Building.
