Detroit man who escaped police custody charged with second murder

(WJBK) - A Detroit man who escaped police custody by sneaking out of the hospital a few weeks ago has been charged with murder for the second time this month.

Highland Park police have called in investigators with Michigan State Police to figure out what went wrong -- how a man now charged in two separate murders was able to escape their custody. For the second time in the last two weeks, 37-year-old Joseph Gray was charged with murder.

Earlier this month, Gray was brought in for questioning in the stabbing death of 62-year-old Oliver Olds in a robbery. He faked a medical issue and was transported from the Highland Park Police Department to the hospital by ambulance. He was without police escort and made his escape.

About 12 hours later after intense media pressure, Gray turned himself in to Detroit Police. Police say he told them he was sick of seeing his face on TV.

Chief Chester Logan called in state police to see how it was possible that he got away.

"They have more resources. They've got a stellar reputation and we just felt the citizens of metropolitan Detroit deserve a first-rate investigation," he said.

Gray has a lengthy wrap sheet that includes child abuse and drug convictions. He was charged in the 2015 murder of a Detroit man, 30-year-old Korteze Woods, who is a former classmate of Grays.

"This is obviously a dangerous person that we are so glad is not on the streets of Metropolitan Detroit now," Logan said.

So far, no disciplinary action has been taken against officers involved in Gray's initial arrest in earlier this month, but it's not out of the question.

"There hasn't been and there won't be until MSP conducts their investigation," Logan said.
