Detroit police looking for runaway gunman in domestic situation

UPDATE: The runaway suspect, Keith Montgomery, was arrested Thursday morning in Shelby Township

Police in Detroit are looking for an armed man who they say fired shots during a domestic situation, and then later at police.

Police were called around 2:30 a.m. to a home in the 900 block of Brentwood, which is near Seven Mile Road and the Chrysler Service Drive.

A woman and her ex-boyfriend had gotten into a fight. Police say the woman's current boyfriend was also at the home trying to alleviate the situation, but that the suspect started firing shots.

The boyfriend was able to get out of the area and called police, but the woman and two young children were still inside the home with the suspect, who police have named as Keith Montgomery.

Police showed up at the home and heard Montgomery arguing with the woman. Police were able to help the woman and the children get out of the house, but say Montgomery was throwing cinder blocks at officer and shooting at them during the process.

Police then thought Montgomery barricaded himself into the home, and authorities tried for hours to negotiate with him to come out with no response.

Just after 7:30 a.m., authorities deployed some sort of chemical agent into the house and went inside and say Montgomery was not inside.

Police believe he may have gotten away when officers were helping the woman and children.

"It appears the suspect was able to escape at the moment he fired shots at the officers. The officers were able to get the woman and the children out of the location, but the suspect may have been able to escape during that timeframe," says Detroit Police Commander Elvin Barren.

Police are looking for Montgomery and say he is armed and dangerous. If you see him you're asked to call Detroit police.
