A Detroit police officer who was injured in a hit-and-run has died, nearly two weeks after the crash, according to the Detroit Police Public Information Office.

Officer Fadi Shukur was hit by the car as he was responding to to a large crowd gathering at a vigil at McNichols near Stahelin around 2:40 a.m. on August 4th.

Shukur was walking to his car when he was hit by a speeding SUV. The driver sped between the officer's cars disregarding their flashing lights.

"Within seconds of him being struck by that vehicle, they immediately placed him in a marked unit and rushed him three miles to where he was treated at a local hospital," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

He was later identified as 19-year-old Jonathan David Cole of Belleville and turned himself in later that same day.

The 30-year-old had been with the department for just one year and was just married a month ago. . He worked on the city's west side with the 8th Precinct.

"Officer Shukur died a hero," Mayor Mike Duggan said.

Cole was arraigned for reckless driving the following Tuesday and the prosecuting attorney claimed that Cole's parents destroyed 'key evidence' but did not elaborate about what the evidence was. The attorney also claimed he flushed his system with water and apple cider vinegar.

Shukur had been on life support immediately after the crash.

This is the third Detroit police officer who has died this year in the line of duty.
