Driver charged with murder for death of mom in hit and run crash

Friends and family remember a woman killed in a chain reaction crash.

The sign, the flowers and the balloons are the beginning of a long goodbye for Alzada Dolencic, the Romulus woman killed by a hit and run driver Wednesday.

"There was never a time my mother wasn't there for me," said son Joseph Strick.

Dolencic had just retired from Livonia Public Schools and she recently bought a cabin in Grayling, Michigan with her husband John.

"The good lord had a reason and you can't argue with the man," John Dolencic said. "When he says it's your time it's your time and all I can do is live with that and try to move on. She's right here and she'll always be there."

In addition to her husband, Alzada Dolencic leaves behind a number of grandchildren and three sons including Strick.

"She did everything for everyone," Strick said. "Anyone in her life. She was just the type of person that would give you the shirt off of her back. If you needed her, she was there."

Police say Onika Fields struck Alzada Dolencic after running a red light.

Fields was formally charged with murder Friday and that's providing some closure for Dolencic's family.

Only some.

"This turned our whole world upside down," Strick said. "I mean I lost my mother for Christ sake."

Fields is expected to be back in court in a few weeks. Dolencic's family and friends will say their final goodbyes at her funeral Tuesday.
