It was an emotional day in court for a former Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy sentenced for a deadly crash.

Matthew Doss received two years’ probation on Friday for a crash that happened Oct. 23, 2016 near Dix-Toledo and Detroit Avenue in Lincoln Park.

Doss was off-duty driving his truck when he struck a car making a Michigan left, critically injuring the passenger in that vehicle, 56-year-old Henry Lowe of Lincoln Park. Lowe later died from his injuries.

Doss, 36, struggled through tears in court as he apologized to Lowe's family.

"I just want to apologize to the Lowe family," he said. "Um ... I am just sorry that we have to be here."

Doss was speeding to work at the time of the accident. Judge Vonda Evans says the lesson is you cannot be in a hurry behind the wheel-- because nobody wins.

He was charged with reckless driving causing death which carried a 15-year maximum penalty.
