Motorcyclist was dragged 100 yards by SUV in accident

STERLING HEIGHTS - "We had probably 20 people out here sitting out on the picnic tables enjoying the end of the night," Giulio Russo said.

It was the last thing Russo or the customers at his ice cream shop ever expected to see at 10 p.m..

Blurry pictures were snapped by someone so shaken up showed the aftermath of a deadly collision.

"A motorcycle ended up right dead center in our entrance way," Russo said. "We ran out there but there was no one there we couldn't find the motorcyclist."

Police say the 44-year-old Shelby Township man was stopped at the red light near Catalpa on his motorcycle when the driver of a 2001 Yukon didn't stop at all.

Witnesses say after the crash that driver slowed down then took off at least three times dragging the victim 100 yards before he was finally able to roll out from under the SUV only to be run over by it.

"I doubt the motorcycle even seen him coming not until the last second like I saw he was stopped at the red light and rear ended," said Lt. Dave Smith, Sterling Heights police.

Russo and two nurses with him did everything they could and so did emergency crews but it was too late. He died at the scene.

Meanwhile the man in the Yukon from Richmond were told briefly drove off, circled back then turned himself into police. Investigators say the accident was alcohol related.
